Many of our replicas come fitted with the wrong type of screws, we've got allen key screws on the 1895 Nagant revolver and posidrive screws fitted to all manner of revolvers (DW715, DW 1st gen',Umarex legends series revolvers, Colt Pythons, Colt SAA, etc.). So for all us who are so 'OCD' that we have to have the proper screws fitted I've cobbled together a list of replica guns that will accept a replacement for the larger style standard M3x8mm pan headed posidrive/philips styled screw. I've found that the following screw is well suited as a replacement as it's larger flat headed shape brings it level with the frame in most of the guns which does look aesthetically more pleasing;
M3 x 8mm Stainless Steel (A2) cheese head slotted bolt
Key.
A - For a silver finish gun the standard stainless steel (A2 or A4) bolt will both fit and match the rest of the gun.
B - For a black/Blued finish the standard stainless steel (A2) or Zinc plated bolt (see the 'how to remove the zinc plating' paragraph below) will be suitable but they'll need the head either heating up to red hot and quenching in cold water (for the A2 version) or the plating removed and chemically blueing with a blueing agent (like the Birchwood Casey cold blue etc.).
List of compatible replica guns.
Umarex S&W model 29, 2x bolts - B
Umarex S&W model 629, 2x bolts - A
Umarex Colt Python (shell loading version), 6x bolts - A or B (dependent on finish) (please see Note A below)
Umarex Legends series revolvers, 4x bolts - A or B (dependent on finish)
ASG Dan Wesson first generation revolvers, 4x boltss - A or B (dependent on finish)
The above S&W 29s have had the heat treatment (B) done to the bolts and really suit the finish of the gun.
The above S&W 629 has got the standard bright finish (A) bolts fitted to it.
Note A
Although the Colt Python does come with two domed slotted bolts it does have four hidden black posidrive bolts hidden underneath the left hand grip. The two domed slotted bolts look far better with the flatter cheese headed screw as it brings it flush to the frame and makes the whole gun look better for it.
How to remove the Zinc plating.
This can easily be done by using distilled white vinegar, simply drop the required parts into a lidded container and cover with the vinegar (29p a bottle from Tesco) and leave for 24-48hrs. Remove the parts and brush off with a stiff brush (wire or nylon will do the job), clean with fresh water. You can then blue the head with a chemical blueing solution to get it to darken off to match the finish of the gun that you're fitting them to.
The above picture shows an A2 bolt head heated up to red hot and then quenched, notice the deep blue hues it has given it.
Sanding and polishing the bolt heads.
I sanded (320 grit) and then polished (400 & then 600 grit) the heads to get a smooth mirror finish, this I did to all of them, irrespective of whether they were being used 'bright' or being blued. It only takes a few minutes and is well worth the extra effort.
Thanks must go to Modski66 for instigating this thread by posting his findings on replacement screws for his S&W 29, all I've done is collate the information and present it here for other members to use.
