Morning all. So after lusting for a Umarex Thompson for a long time, but finding it painful on my thumb joint due to the weight and cramped hand positioning, I thought I would pop in to my local airsoft emporium ( JD Airsoft), and try the cyma airsoft version of this iconic weapon. Well...what a surprise... I can hold it in the aim and fire it without pain... yipeee. Either there is some slight difference in shape/dimensions of the pistol grip in relation to the butt stock , or the lighter weight is the solution...I don`t know, but who cares... I now have a Thompson M1A1 , and I love it. And what is more...... if you are going to have an iconic sub machine gun, then it makes sense to buy one that has select fire. The Cyma version is devoid of trademarks, but I can live with that. It will need `weathering` though, in due course. Here it is.... Pete.

Looks great Pete ! I could live without the trades in exchange for the full auto experience buddy.....seems a fair trade off to me

Agreed - nice!
They've cracked the wood look too, I'm presuming it's wood effect rather than actual tree wood? Apologies if you've spent this months rent on the upgrade and I've just accidentaly diss'd it.
So will you be throwing a drum on it even if only for looks? They do add a bit of weight over a stick though.

Fantastic looking piece of kit there mate, I toyed with getting a Thompson at firsst when i was looking at machine guns also the MP40 But opted for a STEN in the end of course you made the right decision to go with 6mm cos if your going to buy a machine gun .... It HAS to be a MACHINE GUN HO HO HO !! i might even have to come over sometime and compare it with the sten lol

The thing is, due to my arthritic joints, any wood stocked replicas are too heavy for me, so I prefer the faux wood models. And at half the price of the Umarex co2 model, well it means I could buy another one.!!! the 1928 drum magazine version for instance.!! The M1A1 version does not accept a drum magazine. Cyma do a Drum version ....the 1928 model... but they have spoilt it by keeping the side cocking knob of the wartime model, which is just wrong. So if I get a 1928 version it will have to be probably the King Arms version, which has the correct top cocking knob. Pete.

Hmm.. interesting Pete. I have a Thompson, technically two but thats another story, I'm pretty sure its a Cyma and it does take the drum, albeit a tight fit.
To be fair I've had it a while so yours may well be an updated version plus I bounght both gun and mag used so either may have been fettled in some way but as I bought them separately it's (probably) not like they were made to fit by the original owner(s). Yes I know what you mean about the charging handle being in the wrong place but if they'll accept that it does make me wonder why they'd then change something less visually obvious to allow for fitting the iconic drum.
Mysteries, the world is full of them.
As you potentially have the excess cash warming up to the point where your pocket self ignites, have you thought of an airsoft MP40 or maybe the MP44 to balance things out?
The other M1A1 is the guts of an M41-A btw

I have thought of an a/s mp-40, but as I already have the Umarex co2 version I will leave that for a while. I did pick up ( or at least tried to) an mp-44 sturmgewer replica in the airsoft dealers.... bloomin heck that thing is too heavy for my old bones. They did have a soviet ppsh though, which has tickled my taste buds... mmm. The thing is , they have had an influx of historical replicas , so much so that I am spoilt for choice. They have a Lee Enfield smle, a springfield 1903, Garand, stg44, Thompson, ppsh, and others that I have forgotten. I recently bought the double bell Mauser k98 too. Like buses, they had none for yonks, then loads all at once.... what should a bloke do. Pete.

I'm probably not the right person to answer (sensibly) your question given the number of the things I have stashed away around the house.
I mentioned the mp44 as a, soft of, contemporary of the Thompson. And it's on my to-do list
The MP40 in the airsoft version would give you the full auto that the airgun has to deny you. For this type of gun I think I'd value the FA over any perceived accuracy or power advantages the 4.5bb version gives you.
But back to the question, Whatever you fancy as long as you don't spend money you don't have or need for the really important things (toy guns don't honestly fall into that group). If later you decide it's not giving you the satisfaction you thought it would, you still have an asset you can sell.
Blimey that sounded almost... "Adult" I'd better go have a word with myself.

So, I have adopted a different approach to weathering on this one. AS the lower frame is plastic and the upper metal, there was no point in rubbing it down to the bare metal and backing it, as paint would have to be used on the lower ( plastic) section. So I opted to recolour it all using Tamiya acrylic modelling paints. I started with a base coat of `gun metal` which is a dark silver, then over the top of that with `umber`, which is lovely dark brown/black earthy colour, then followed up by adding a few `rust` spots. Then some localised distressing. I added a repro ` Kerr` sling, which I also aged. The pics aren`the best but you get the idea ... looks better in the flesh. Pete.

Looks great mate ....another potential way to age plastic which may also work on metal is using graphite dust and lacquer. i might give it a go at some point just to see if it works .... apparently movie prop rubber guns are aged like this

That's what I used to do as a kid to my plastic model kit guns, made them look really good.

I forgot to mention.... I also aged/weathered the faux wood by wetting a swap with `umber` paint then wiping the excess paint off immediately. Then you lightly wipe the colour where you want to darken the wood to give a soiled look. Works a treat.
Pete.
