In the New Year I shall be looking seriously at getting a M29 smooth bore with the 6.5 inch barrel. However, have heard that they can be rather under powered compared to,say, the Schofield or Webley MK6. What say you good people?

In truth, the Webley mkVI and the Schofield are the two top fps performing CO2 replica revolvers around ! Everything else is a very close second to that pair of hoodlums, lol. I got both of my 29s in the smoothbore versions but never actually chronographed them prior to swapping the barrels out but I have done a quick chronograph since;
NB - All results are done using 7 grain lead pellets.
S&W model 29 3" - an average of 353fps over the course of 66 shots S&W model 29 6½" - an average of 374fps over the course of 72 shots
I did 'fettle' the valve stems for increased fps performance (by opening the ports up with a diamond tipped dremmel bit).
By comparison, my S&W model 629s achieve;
S&W 629 5" - an average of 381fps over the course of 60 shots. S&W 629 6½" - an average of 388fps over the course of 72 shots.
Again, I did 'fettle' the valve stems on these two as well.
But the aforementioned 'hoodlums' come in at;
Schofield - an average of 392fps over the course of 78 shots. Webley mkVI - an average of 412fps over the course of 72 shots.
And, I've never 'fettle' these two at all, as their performance was always bloody good.

Thanks for the information Headhunter. Are the valve stems hardened or just Stainless steel? Decent FPS your getting by the way.

Thanks for the information Headhunter. Are the valve stems hardened or just Stainless steel? Decent FPS your getting by the way. They're just stainless steel, it doesn't take long to enlarge the ports in the valve stem with a small diamond mandrill. The fps increase over the standard performance is all down to reworking the valve stem's ports. I've done it to virtually all of my modern replica revolvers (DW 1st gen', DW715s, S&W 29s & 629s and my Colt Pythons) with the exception of the Chiappa Rhino, which I am still looking into tweaking the fps performance of.

I personally don't chrono any of my replicas these days and I'm happy with the power of all of them for plinking. I do like to test them now and again with the bean tin chrono though (not a drinks can). The ribbed bean tins are a true test. My M29 8.375" does a good job on them.

Hi Andy, Are you rifled or non-rifled barrel on that then just out of interest.

I’d be well happy with the extra performance 1.875” would give me over my short 6.5”s 😆

Hello Again. Something else I need to ask regarding the M29. How is the finish holding up? I ask this because as we know the blued finish on the SAA wears through rather quickly. The finish on the M29 looks similar, but is it?

It is exactly the same as the Dan Wesson 715 pellet 'steel grey' finish, which never showed any hint of fading on the one I had for over three years.

The finish on the M29 looks similar, but is it? My steel grey DW715-6" is over 6 years old and shows no signs of wear 'n' tear to the finish, the 29 has the same sort of finish, just a slightly different tone of the base colour. Personally, apart from being a finger print magnet, the finish should look good for years to come (if kept properly).
