OK, So I bought one a couple of weeks ago off Doyley ( grand bloke him) , mainly for use as a photo prop but, as always, the will to use it wins. After putting 4 magazines through it was so uncomfortable to shoot that I had to put it away. It's probably 45 years since I fired the real things and don't remember any problems then , even after putting 25 rounds through each of more than 60 guns for test purposes . Possibly a lot more but in dribs and drabs rather than than big batch I remember well . Reading through another forum, I find that Pete mentioned having the same problem as did somebody else.
QUESTION.......... How many others have the same problem of the front of the buttstock pressing against the back of one's right thumb.?
The discomfort caused makes me wary of firing it and takes away some of the fun of using what is essentially a fun gun. It maybe that some of us have large hands and the gun was originally designed when people were generally smaller.
Thoughts please?

I have to say that I do not get any discomfort when using mine. I have medium size hands. Not noticed any problems myself.

Seriously, just got the M1A1 out again to see if I can feel any discomfort and I can't.

It is very strange , both the op and I get serious discomfort when using the Thompson. This is the reason I don`t own one .... I would love one, it`s iconic and the Umarex version is a great shooter. Of course , I can use it without my thumb going numb..... if I fire it from the hip.!!!! Pete.

Well just had a shoot with mine in my garage range. 3 magazines worth. Trying to see where this discomfort is coming from that you guys are explaining. And guess what, I still don't get it. Mystery.

If you remove your bondage gear before shooting it might help...
...I'll get my coat.

Basically Andy, when holding the Tommy in the normal shoulder aim position, finger on the trigger... the large thumb joint knuckle ( where it joins your hand) is pressing into the underside of the shoulder stock, due to the way the stock is shaped. It really hurts after a few minutes. I don`t have a Thompson or I would take a photo. Pete.

Can the 'bump' not be sanded off to ease the fit ?

Perhaps some people are just different.

Yes thank you Shaun...... as it happens, I do have large hands for a 5`8" tall, 10 stone chap. Now if the Tommy had a real wood stock I would break out the spokeshave and alter as necessary, but it being hollow placcy....!!!!!
Pete.
