I don't think I have ever seen any discussions or topics here around battery powered AS guns. What is the general opinion on them being discussed as they are technically air powered from what I understand but not in a traditional sense?
There are some really nice AR replicas out there and was just curious as to opinion?

They are definitely air(guns) They are just like spring guns but electric powered. A spring-loaded piston pump just like AW springers but the power is supplied by battery driven internal electric motor which transmits through a gearbox to compress the pump spring and propel the bbs via the compression of air. I don’t see any reason against discussion.

The only thing that puts me off them (apart from the fact that they are 6mm firing) is the continuous 'whirring' noises and lack of blowback/recoil operation but generally (as all AS guns seem to be), they're better made, more accurate replicas of their RS counterparts (with trades and such like) plus there's plenty of choice.
I'm in two minds whether to include them within the remit of this forum, one part of me says stick with gas powered replicas only and the other part of me says,"well they are replicas" irrespective of their type of powered system.....plus it should be down to the individual to decide what they want rather than a forum to 'dictate' acceptable choices.
Might be good idea to find out what other members think or even if they have some in their collections, although they are not for me, we are all different and an acceptance of those differences goes a long way to broaden our membership.....if they were accepted as a valid replica under this forums umbrella.

I've probably burnt off more of my spare cash on airsoft than airguns. When I first discovered them, AEG was realistically the only practical way to go for rifle and submacine size guns.
Pistols ran on HFC134 and some brave or foolish people, looking for better performance ran green gas.
Time went by, gas in mag rifles appeared, batteries got better and AEP pistols appeared - and vanished.
I'd agree my gas rifles are more engaging than the AEGs with realistic capacity magazines, blowback.. my scar makes a delicious "ting" as it cycles
My AEGs never spring a leak, magazines are cheap cold doesn't worry them, less finicky about maintenance and ceanliness.
Would you prefer a reliable modern car or a something with more character? Your view might be coloured by if you can only choose the one and then have to drive it every day, rain, dry, hot, quiet country road, city snarl up, motorway...
Being way lower power and basically designed to be safe to shoot at people I could take my then 5 year old into the garden and introduce him to shooting.
So most of my airsoft are electric
To be fair I've not bought anything now for a little while, last thing was an E-11, and the newer models do offer some recoil options. The sewing machine noise? Yep, probably no real way of avoiding that but the trade you make is reliability and full auto.
I'm in the lucky position of having, and enjoying, both.

Yes my question was more to stir debate than a desire to start posting. I think they are tied to a niche section of machine gun replicas in AS world. I'd like to see and hear about them in my opinion but just wanted to gauge opinion

That's completely reasonable so in the spirit of debate. OK so to those who say airsoft isn't an airgun, and I do see a distinct difference, in my head probably based on fundamental purpose...
Tha law agrees with you, certainly in as much as who can own, power, full auto, shotgun type guns, colour rules
I guess you'll also discount anything CO2 because it's not "air"?
The Browning Air Star (?) because it used a motor & battery to compress the spring (just like an AEG)? How do we feel about PCP? I mean, no spring or piston. Pump ups, single stroke pneumatics, any wriggle room for gas rams? BB guns aren't really airguns are they? So lead pellet firers only?
How narrow do you want to limit it down to?
I'd say airsoft has a place here as long as it's based on something "real", I'd include fictional guns like my pulse rifle, Robocop Beretta and storm trooper blaster but not so much guns which are simply a gun shaped object firing 6mm BB's based on nothing, but where the form has followed from function.
This isn't an airsoft site so I can see why discussion of running around the woods might make some uncomfortable (as does killing live quarry for others) but the guns themselves are (almost always) replicas so why not show pictures of your new (or old) baby. Seek out or offer help, advice. Just keep it to the guns and punching holes in inanimate targets.
I'm willing to bet there are very few users of this or any similar forum who have simply arrived here and have no interest in, never dabbled with, wondered about, any other target sport.
I think we're all interested in guns of the replica flavour so I'd say talk about them.

I’ve only got into AS since my diagnosis in February 2021. Reason being that I will lose my AWC in the foreseeable future and hence will not be able to own AW. As I would not want to be totally devoid of shooting then ownership of AS will be my saviour. Never yet considered AEG but I might well when I’m finally forced to part with my AWs.

As many know i am a fan of 6mm replicas ... i own a couple but as there is such a wide variety of them out there im becoming interested in a lot more ,my comment on this thread earlier was not meant in anyway to dicourage discussion on AEG 6mm guns and was made i must admit with a little igmorance of this type of airgun. Note i always describe these as 6mm as not all 6mm airguns are suitable for airsoft use due to them being too powerful .

As I would not want to be totally devoid of shooting then ownership of AS will be my saviour. Never yet considered AEG but I might well when I’m finally forced to part with my AWs. Sorry to hear that, for me airsoft provided a similar avenue as when I first met her, my wife (to be) was a little anti-gun following "a bad experience" when she worked for a bank. Although not initially thrilled about my new toy she put up with it and while I wouldn't say even now that she trully loves them she fully accepts them and has bought me more than one or two. I think if my only options had been airgun I'd never have got her over the first hurdle.
At some point in the (hopefully distant) future I'd advocate for an airsoft assault rifle for you, gas or electric, running at airsoft power levels so you can go full auto if you want. Maybe pick up a shotgun, one of the ones that fires multiple BBs a time. Add a pistol, et voila - you're set up for a bit of three gun shooting, reactive targets, milk cartons...
Go for gas for the recoil and to avoid any latch up issues with repeated single shots on aegs. Buy an AR and customise it to your hearts content, they're Barbie for boys.
From my perspective if my choice was a single shot airgun AR or a select fire airsoft AR it would be the airsoft. I know this is true for me because I have the mp5k in both 4.5mm and 6mm flavours, and simply put - mp5's aren't semi auto guns, even though they are.
I'll still end up buying an airgun AR because I'm a bloke, I'm weak willed and "ohh look, shiny".

I personally think that they should be included into this forum as they are replicas and they are pneumatically powered which as defined in the forums title (REPLICA AIRGUN Forum) should therefore be included. So from this moment forward, AEGs will be included within this forum but obviously any posts should be exclusively limited to the RIF-RAF section. I don't think that debating the merits of any type of replica helps to unite us but only serves to fractionalise members into sub-groups, we are all different, we all require different things from our replicas and as such, we should all be respectful of these differences and unite under one banner; 'Replica Airgins'. CaptDAR - I can open up a new AEG section in the RIF-RAF if you feel that it is warranted, I'll leave that up to you as you are the Marshall round these parts. As I've previously said, they're not for me but I can understand the appeal, Heck ! CO2 shell loading revolvers are not for everyone and I know that much already, but I'm hoping that you all see the error of your ways and will eventually come round to my way of thinking, lol....
