seeing a lot of members own one now: Uzi does it! Uzi em “Uzi” Gal - Creator of the UZI Submachine Gun Shortly after the outbreak of Israel’s War of Independence in 1948, Uziel Gal began working to design a new submachine that he completed in 1951. The gun was crafted using a unique design that enabled the magazine to be stored in the weapon’s handle, which drastically shortened the weapon and made it more battle-effective. The revolutionary weapon, which came to be known as the UZI after its creator, was quickly adopted by the IDF and incorporated into its various brigades – notably the Special Forces. Since its creation, the UZI has been exported to over ninety countries and is one of the world’s most sold weapons. For his historic contribution, Uziel received the Chief of Staff Citation – one of the military’s highest – as well as the Israel Security Award, the reward’s first ever recipient. Uziel continued to design weapons until his death on September 7, 2002.

Another interesting little fact about him, he was asked by the US Govt. to officially visit America and meet the President, he gave only one condition; As long as they would organise a full exploratory trip (with a guide, no limitations, etc.) to the Ruger factory ! The US Govt. contacted Ruger who agreed to do it and said it would be an honour. When Uziel Gal visited, the guide (who was Bill Ruger himself) asked him why he chose to visit Ruger and he replied,"Because you are the best handgun manufacturer in the world". Ruger sensed an opportunity and asked him to collaborate on a few projects, which he willingly accepted and is credited with working on a number of Ruger projects. When publicly asked about his involvement with Ruger he stated that their ultra modern manufacturing processes (they invented the process of casting parts for guns, commonly called MIM (metal injected moulding)), their reduced overheads and their successful business model. In truth he could have visited any number of US gun manufacturers (Colt, S&W, etc.) but he ultimately chose Ruger just to study their state of the art production techniques, as his 'Uzi' was a mass produced, cheap to make SMG made from cheaply manufactured pressed steel parts.
It's one thing to design a gun but it's another thing entirely to get it made, for a cheap cost and have it run so reliably that it overnight became the 'defacto' gun for all 'close protection' units around the world from the 1960's right up to the late 90's. Just like the AK47, it's success is not just down to it's simple design but the ease of which it can be produced as they both have lots of pressed steel parts, Uziel Gal knew this and the world wide success of the Uzi is symptomatic of this very valuable knowledge.
Uziel Gal, Mikhail Kalashnikov, John Moses Browning, Samuel Colt, Emilio Ghisoni, Bill Ruger, Benjamin Tyler Henry and Daniel B. Wesson all belong to a very prestigious group of gun designers who have successfully designed various types of guns. These men are legendary icons in the gun designing world and all have been imitated, but none have been bettered.

It is rumored that he took 'inspiration' from the Czechoslovakian prototype ZK 476 of the mid 40's. Looking at the 476, it certainly seems so!
