I noticed when I got the Colt Ranger that the head of the small screw in the rear frame is torn out. How can I remove the bit that’s left so I can replace the screw ?

That doesn't look right at all, if it was a broken screw it would be solid in the centre and the hole is not deep enough.
Have you tried removing the rest of the screws from the side plate and seeing if there is actually a screw in there ? You might find that the plate may well lift off if you've removed the rest of the screws.
It looks to me (and I could be wrong) that the last owner has tried to put an escutcheon in the hole to put a false slotted screw over the top of it, that would explain the marks around the edge of the screw hole too. Either that or the guy over tightened the screw and stripped the threads out of the original hole, then drilled it out and punched in a roll pin or tried to fit a threaded replacement.
try taking the complete side plate off David, see how far you can get.....

Thanks Shaun done what you suggested and all sorted. Plate came of easily and a small roll pin had been substituted. No damage to threads luckily and I’ve replaced with a screw I happened to have. All good now.

All good now. That's good ! Luckily he must have just lost the original screw and then just stuck a roll pin in its place, lol. At least the screw threads were still intact enough for you to replace the roll pin with a screw. A roll pin though ! lol
