I bought my first copy of the CP88 20 years ago and it was a bag of shit. Everything went wrong. Eventually I decided to burn the paint off with a blowtorch to make it look more like a stainless steel firearm and it ended up melting. I didn't know it was pot metal. I took what was left of it to the gunsmiths in my town who started smirking as soon as he saw what I’d done - nonetheless he gave me a discount on a replacement CP88 and I felt somewhat happy continuing my foray into the world of CO2 guns - it certainly wasn't going well up to now.
I took the replacement 88 home and introduced it to my live in girlfriend’s Take That poster - Jason Orange - a big dobbing hole in his head. Take that Jason. I was happy blowing holes in the poster as it usually lived above the bed when I wasn't shooting it and often the girlfriend would bend her head backwards to look at it while having a shag. I was halfway though taking potshots at Gary Barlow when the gun jammed, I didn't have a clue what was wrong and didn't even want to attempt to fix it. Back off to the shop it went - gunsmith jiggled it, muttered something and replaced it with a brand new gun - I needed that gun, I had work to finish on the Take That poster and for a time it worked beautifully, until the power dropped out of it one day. I was so disappointed. I could fart a pellet out with more power than that gun could muster. It didn't matter, by that time my work was completed on the Take That poster, it was a peppered mess and I told the girlfriend moths had done it. My relationship didn't last much longer after that and I left both girlfriend and pistol behind in search of a better cook and a better pastime. Yet like the first kiss, first shag, first car I never could quite put that pistol out of my mind despite returning to shooting some years later and actively avoiding the CP88 - in fact actively avoiding all pellet firers because of it and enjoying a ruddy good time with bb pistols instead.
A new beginning …
Joining the online airgun forums in the latter part of 2020 was like starting a new job and discovering an ex girlfriend from a tumultuous past relationship being on staff and popping up all over the place - The CP88 had been on recent blogs, photos, threads and discussions on every airgun website I came across - how was I to resist becoming interested again? I wasn’t. That’s what! I scuttled off to my local RFD and with as much awe as a young Luke Skywalker first taking hold of Alec Guinness’ lightsaber I held in my own hands, for the first time in twenty years …. well, you know what it is … a new hope!
CP88! The lightsaber of the pellet gun world!
There’s not many pistols that make me dance around the living room going swish pretending I’m fighting Darth Vader. This one does! It’s silver, it’s compact, it feels amazing to hold and if I was in trapped a cave on planet Hoth I’d absolutely want this by my side to fend off hairy cave beasts!
Will it bullseye a womp rat while riding around in a T16? I’d say so! This thing is accurate, in fact it’s so accurate I’ve not needed to buy a different front sight for it like I did for my Beretta 92FS the CP88 shoots clean and straight - right out of the box, not that is comes in a box but a rather nice case further adding to the fun and pleasure this premium piece of pellet firing masterpiece’ery brings to you.
I know what I’d rather play with …
I’m not quite sure what is it about this gun that makes it so appealing, to me at least. The nickel finish is flawless, the slide’s engraving is perfectly in tone with the guns finish and doesn't scream replica, it’s well made imo, it’s a great shape and feels fantastic to hold. Perhaps it’s simply because it’s the first Co2 pistol I owned and I feel nostalgic. Whatever it is, it’s become the Mr Spock to my Glock’s Captain Kirk and even though I’d still rescue my Glock first in a house fire, the CP88 takes pride of place in my collection.
I like mah' women like ah' like mah' guns; wrapped in leather!
I bought this magazine around the time of purchasing my original CP88 - it held sentimental value just like the CP88 - probably because the Take That obsessed GF didn't want to be out done by the lady on the cover and bought herself a similar leather mini dress too - and posed with the CP88. Knacker or not it was a very photogenic gun and I’m still taking photos of guns to this day - minus the tottie!
