Evening gents, I picked up a nickel/polished Makarov from the AGF sales last year and have always wondered if I can improve the finish on the metalwork with some polishing. It is a nice piece, but it has a bit of a grimy look about the finish. It doesn't look as nice a finish as the one Wild Bill recently sold on the AGF for example. I recently picked up a Dremel for work on wooden grips, but I am now like a kid with a new toy and am looking for other way I can use it. It has polishing compound and soft polishing wheel accessories and was wondering if using it on my Mak to improve the finish would work well or end up making it worse or even damaging the surface. Any suggestions?

I'd be inclined to have a go on the underside of the slide first in an inconspicuous place. If the dremmel has adjustable speed then wind it down and work the speed up gradually if the finish looks okay.
what polishing compound was you thinking of using ?

Great shout, there is a nice shiny section on the underside at the front I can practise on. With regards to the compound, I have no idea - there is a small brown block of what looks like crayon that came with the kit, but its simply labelled 'Polishing Compound' so they aren't giving much detail at all. Any recommendations on compound? I might try it on something else first, like an on old 2p coin

the 'wax crayon' sounds very much like a jeweller's rouge type of thing. I'd be inclined to get some grinding powder, you can mix that with clean oil (a light oil) and use that. Anything from 600 to 1200 will do you, I'd be inclined to get an 800, especially if there's no deep scratches to the finish that need to be removed.
You could also try brasso, autosol etc. as they're basically a polishing compound, it's surprising what will work on different materials.
Remember, when it comes to polishing 'less is sometimes more', don't make the mistake of using loads in one go as that will work against you and also keep a nice clean and dry mop head ready for the final buff.

Only just realised tonight through playing around with the Mak that you can actually engage the slide catch despite this model not being a blow back Jesus H Christ that is a powerful spring, releasing it sounds amazing
