After working on a set of HW45 grips that are currently sat on my KWC 1911, I have decided to get another set to have a bash at getting the fit better and to stain in a rosewood finish. I picked these up from ANT supplies - £15 delivered which I thought was pretty reasonable. No need to add the safety bar cut out and the mag release cut out to these, and best of all no fettling required for the screw holes! Just the usual CO2 recess needed in the back of these ones Here is the site link where they have a few other options as well if anyone is interested - www.ant-supplies.uk/pistol-accessories/colt-1911-wood-grips.html

I’ve been looking at them before but would have preferred them with medallions.

Same grips as above a few of days later - about 5 coats of rosewood stain I got off eBay for a fiver and a couple of layers of CCL conditioning oil. They are darkening nicely and getting a very slight shine off the oil

They're really really nice now buddy Far better than when new. Yeah they definitely need work from new, which I prefer as it gives you the freedom to customise. I've held these up against my polished Umarex 1911 A1 and they look fantastic - they would just need a lot of shaping as the Umarex handles are smaller around the edges. They would also need some work and thought putting into the rear side of the grip that detaches from the CO2 port side. I'm not sure how Umarex approached it with their official wood handles, the rubber standard ones have recessed area for the metal clip that holds it in (Dremel should resolve) and a couple of rubber 'rods' that guide it into holes on the frame. Definitely a mini project for my next set but I need to get more time in with the Dremel first as they would need work that is more precise and visible!

I have some wood grips on my John Wayne Ltd Edition Colt 1911. I like them. But the plastic ones that came with it are also very very nice. With a nice pattern and colour. Wood grips Plastic Grips:

RIP to these grips, managed to Dremel out the back so they fit perfectly but on tightening the bottom screw I felt some resistance followed by a snap. There is now a crack from the screw hole down to the bottom of the grip. Might try and repair with glue, might just bin them! Proper pissed off!

Lesson learned (I hope, lol)....you're get the next ones right. Just out of curiosity, did you go too far dremeling out the recess on the back of the grip ? Is that what caused the weakness ? Or was there a fault in the actual grips ?

Lesson learned (I hope, lol)....you're get the next ones right. Just out of curiosity, did you go too far dremeling out the recess on the back of the grip ? Is that what caused the weakness ? Or was there a fault in the actual grips ? Not too sure, I think the mistake I made was trying to go close to the lip at the bottom but not remove it. I received a pair off eBay today that fit like a glove, although they aren't as nice cosmetically. The fitment on the back does have the bottom lip removed and I created a template from them. I eventually gave up on the lip and once I ground it away they seemed to fit fine. I've super glued the crack from the rear of the grip and will have another go at them tomorrow. It made me really angry at the time though lol Main lesson learned - do the fettling and fit before you put any work into staining etc. as you'll potentially save yourself a lot of time

I managed to sort the mini crack with some well placed superglue from the rear, it's held up nicely and you cant see the crack unless you get your eyeball next to the grip. Just need to take some more out of the rear of the other and they will be ready. Will post a pic when completed.
